HOLLY MASS FIOROVA - LOBORIKA

Announcement of the Holy Mass in Honor of St. Flor – Loborika, October 27, 2025.
You are warmly invited to the celebration of the feast day of St. Flor, which will take place on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 5 PM at the Church of St. Flor in Loborika.
St. Flor, a bishop from the Italian town of Oderzo, is considered one of the earliest proclaimers of the Christian faith in Istria, particularly in the area around Pula. His veneration is deeply rooted in the tradition of this region, and churches in Loborika, Pomer, and Kranjci are dedicated to him.
Let us come together to celebrate the feast of this beloved saint and pray for his intercession. 🙏

OUR LADY OF HEALTH IN HRELJIĆI

This Sunday, starting program at 10 am, a solemn Holy Mass in honor of Our Lady of Health will be held in Hreljići. The pilgrimage gathering in front of the church bearing the same name, built back in 1726, is part of a long-standing tradition and deep religious devotion in southern Istria.
After the Mass, the cultural and musical program begins with a performance by KUD Mate Balota from Rakalj, followed by Trio Asi, who will lift the atmosphere with their music.
Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy a variety of food and drink offerings, and the youngest can have fun riding the mini train from Ranch Barba Tone.
At 4 pm, a football match will take place between NK Manjadvorci and NK Cement.
Parking is provided for all visitors, and everyone is kindly asked to follow the temporary traffic regulations.
The pilgrimage to Our Lady of Health in Hreljići is one of the smallest Marian shrines in Croatia, yet it holds great spiritual power. Every year, on the second Sunday of October, it gathers faithful from all over Istria and beyond.
During the solemn procession with the statue of Our Lady, accompanied by prayer and song, the faithful pray for health and personal intentions. After the Mass, visitors have the opportunity to venerate the sacred image in the parish church and, in a special way, express their gratitude and entrust themselves to the Blessed Virgin Mary. 🙏

FREE GUIDED TOUR OF THE REMAINS OF THE CHURCH OF ST. THEODORE (TUDOR)

Tourist Board Marčana invites history and archaeology enthusiasts to a free guided tour of the remains of the Church of St. Theodore, led by Siniša Pamić, Head of the Department of Terrestrial Archaeology and Senior Conservation Archaeologist at the Croatian Conservation Institute, on Saturday, November 29, 2025.

Meeting point: Rakalj town square at 11:00 AM.
Tour duration: approx. 45 minutes.
Participation is free, but registration is mandatory via info@tzmarcana.com no later than Friday, November 28 by 12:00 PM.

The site with the remains of the Church of St. Theodore, locally known as Sv. Tudor, is located near the local road connecting Krnica and Rakalj. The church is a single-nave structure with a square Gothic sanctuary inscribed in a semicircular apse, aligned according to traditional orientation.

Interest in the site over the past 150 years has mainly been driven by the discovery of two votive altars inscribed in Latin, dedicated to the only known male deity of the Histri tribe — Melosocus. In addition, three more altars dedicated to the same deity were discovered in the nearby Golubinčina cave.

Since 2018, archaeological excavations have been taking place at the site, funded by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, and carried out by the Croatian Conservation Institute. Initial work included clearing the site of dense vegetation, trial archaeological excavations, and documentation of the existing condition.

During the excavations, remains discovered include the foundations of the semicircular apse with two lesenes, the west facade wall, the entire south wall, stone paving, and a lime mortar floor inside the church. The first church, nearly 8 meters shorter than the preserved structure, was built on the foundations of an earlier Late Antiquity structure of unknown purpose. It likely partially collapsed and was later rebuilt during the Romanesque period, when it was extended westward to its current length of 21 meters, while retaining the original width.

Research so far indicates the church underwent another restoration in the 15th century, when a square Gothic sanctuary, triumphal arch, and pointed vault were added within the semicircular apse. The side entrances on the north and south walls were walled up, and burials took place around the church in stone-built graves made of dry walls and upright stone slabs, covered with stone lids.

Besides the church walls, a major focus was on the cemetery surrounding the church. By the end of 2025, 70 graves had been excavated, often containing multiple individuals. The deceased were typically buried in a west–east orientation, laid on their backs with legs extended, arms crossed over the chest or abdomen, or with one arm on the torso and the other extended alongside the body.

Radiocarbon analysis of samples from various graves indicates that burials at the site occurred from the early 13th to the first quarter of the 16th century. Anthropological analysis revealed a higher number of adult male burials than female, with approximately 50% male, 18% female, and 32% children. Based on the osteological material analyzed so far, most of the adults buried at St. Theodore suffered from severe congenital or acquired deformities and chronic illnesses, requiring ongoing care during their lifetimes.

ST MARY OF LUZAR - TRADITIONAL CRAFTS FAIR

Marčana Tourist Board invites you to an old-fashioned gathering in Mutvoran on Sunday, October 5th, 2025, for the celebration of St. Mary of Luzar.
The event opens at 10:00 AM at the village entrance, near the ancient walls, with a festive performance by the Mate Balota Folklore Ensemble from Rakalj and the Traditional Crafts Fair.
At 10:30 AM, the program continues in the village loggia with a costumed interpretation of a scene from the video game “The Book of Grando” by the Pula-based company The Mark, whose story is set in Mutvoran itself.
Nearby, in the Children’s Corner (Kantunić) next to the loggia, the youngest visitors will be able to color characters from the video game.
At 11:40 AM, a Holy Mass and a procession through the village will take place in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene.
In front of the church, visitors can take photos at the photo corner with the “Mutvoran Bride”, wearing a replica of the famous traditional wedding wreath and learn about the symbolism of its colorful ribbons.
At 1:00 PM, a fun multilingual storytelling walk through Mutvoran will begin in front of the loggia, led by Aleksandra Dajković.
From 10 AM to 3 PM, behind the church, visitors can explore an authentic Traditional Crafts Fair accompanied by local culinary delights.
Craftspeople will showcase their nearly forgotten skills, including stonemasonry, woodworking, pottery, ceramics, fishing, traditional instrument making, barrel making, winemaking, rakija distilling, beekeeping, souvenir and handicraft production.
There will also be demonstrations of crocheting and lace-making, embroidery (rikamivanje), cotton and linen dyeing, candle making with beeswax, natural cosmetics production, and various old-fashioned decorative and functional items.
Expect traditional dancing, singing, and live folk music throughout the day!
From 10 AM to 3 PM, the atmosphere will be enriched by Duo Magnolia, playing the accordion, mih, roženice, harmonica, and other traditional Istrian instruments.
Today, Mutvoran is a small village with only a few residents. Its glorious past lives on through the remains of prehistoric hillforts and medieval walls, as well as the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene, which houses valuable artistic heritage — including the traditional wedding wreath and altar by Paolo Campsa de Bobotia — and a stone bestiary displayed in the loggia at the village entrance.

The Tourist Board of the Municipality of Marčana invites you to the 6th Olive Oil and Wine Festival of the Municipality of Marčana on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at 4 p.m. on the square in Krnica.
For the sixth year in a row, the event brings together and presents exhibitors from family farms from the area of the municipality of Marčana, not only those who have been professionally engaged in wine and olive growing for a long time and produce larger quantities, but also smaller, “recreational” producers of wine and extra virgin olive oil. The event also has an educational component. Edi Družetić will present at the workshop how to properly taste olive oil, Emil Perdec will speak and introduce us to the world of sparkling wines, and arranger Morena Širola will show participants how to express themselves creatively by making wreaths of olive branches. Today, Mutvoran is a village with a small number of inhabitants, whose glorious past is reminded of the remains of prehistoric and medieval castle walls, as well as the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene with extremely valuable artistic equipment (a wedding wreath and an altar by Paolo Campsa de Boboti) and a bestiary exhibited in the lodge in front of the entrance to the village. The desire is to present the authenticity of the Marčana destination by reviving traditional festivals and old customs, and at the same time contribute to the preservation of the culture of that region in an entertaining, educational and sustainable way, creating an additional motive for visiting and exploring Mutvoran.

CONCERT TradInEtno and Ethno Croatia ORCHESTRA - ETHNO MUSICAL TREAT IN HRELJIĆI

This Friday, July 12, in front of the Church of the Mother of God of Health in Hreljići, starting at 9:00 p.m., a musical spectacle awaits lovers of ethnic melodies and rhythms. The repertoire of the most beautiful ethnic songs will be jointly performed by two orchestras: Ethno Croatia and TradInEtno Orchestra. The love for ethnic musical expression will bring together about 30 excellent musicians in joint interpretation and music making. The event is organized by the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Marčana in cooperation with the International Cultural Center of Croatian Musical Youth in Grožnjan, the Municipality of Marčana, the Hreljići Parish Office and the Communal company Mandalena. Ethno Croatia is a project of Jeunesses Musicales International, a music camp where young people learn about traditional music from each other and with the help of artistic mentors, deepen and expand their knowledge about their own traditional musical culture, but also about the heritage of other cultures whose heirs participate in this international camp . Through learning the musical traditions of others, young people learn about equality, tolerance and democracy. The Ethno Croatia music camp has been held in Grožnjan for 19 years, with the aim of connecting young musicians from all over the world. Young people teach each other music from their cultures and countries, and in a week they prepare that repertoire together, with the help of artistic mentors (this year they are Jonas Malfliet from Belgium and Lucija Maroević from Croatia), in order to perform it in front of a wider audience after a week of work. audience. Ethno Croatia consists of about 20 musicians from different parts of the world, who play even more different instruments, and the charm is precisely that both the composition and the repertoire change every year. All the repertoire is learned by ear, with the so-called peer-to-peer method, which allows all calibers and levels of knowledge to participate in this unique music camp. This year’s Ethno Croatia orchestra will be made up of young people from Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Finland, but also Kenya, New Zealand, etc… This year’s artistic mentors of the Ethno Croatia music camp are Jonas Malfliet from Belgium and Lucija Maroević from Croatia, both are outstanding and experienced musicians. Lucija Maroević was born in Zagreb, where she has been involved in music since kindergarten, primarily singing in choirs. She studied ethnology and cultural anthropology as well as German language and literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, and during her studies she discovered the concept of Ethno camps, with which she has been actively working for the past 7 years. She visited several Ethno camps in Europe and the world (Ethno Germany 2018, Ethno France 2019, Ethno Croatia 2019 and 2020, Ethno India 2020) and similar events (TradInEtno 2017 – 2019, Folktrepó 2018 and 2019, Crescendo: Music of Change 2019…), and in 2021 she participated in the education for artistic mentors Ethnofonik. Her musical creativity primarily involves the preservation and reinterpretation of musical traditions, which she achieves by organizing and leading vocal workshops, working in ethno and world music ensembles, she is the artistic director of the choir Domestic guests and the founder and artistic director of MVA Kitice. Since 2022, she has been the organizer/project coordinator and resident artistic mentor of Ethno Croatia. Jonas Malfliet broke his little finger when he was three years old. No big deal, his mother said. The only thing is that he will not be able to become a professional musician. But it turned out that he quite stubbornly did not want to listen to his mother, and today he can’t keep his fingers off the black and white keys! He appears with his accordion in world music ensembles such as Damast Duo and Jiraan (with Syrian violinist Shalan Alhamwy) and the eight-piece Belgian-Brazilian party band Euforró. He accompanies theater productions and is an artistic mentor at several international music camps. Between buses and trains, he is also the resident pianist for De Rechtvaardige Rechters, a program on Belgian National Radio.
Furthermore, there is nothing he enjoys more than playing 1001 nights with musicians of the most diverse traditions, trying to discover what music he likes to play the most. No one knows what song he will play next, least of all himself. But one thing is certain: you are in for a surprise. TradInEtno orchestra is a group of 10 to 20 enthusiastic instrumentalists and singers from Pazin, Pula, Marčana, Rijeka, Krk, Izola and Portorož. For more than a year, they have been sharing music with each other and learning from each other, but also from experienced ethnic musicians such as Dario Marušić, Dunja Bahtijarević and Goran Farkaš. At their concerts, you can hear songs from the Istrian climate, as well as repertoire from Belgium, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Turkey, Argentina, Slovenia, Macedonia and other countries. Their music is a musical journey from Istria to the world.

4. XCM RAKALJ MOUNTAIN-BIKE MARATHON

This year’s race is scored for the Croatian Cup, and 9 categories are contested according to the regulations of the Croatian Cycling Association. The start is planned in the very center of Rakalj at 11:00 am. The race has two tracks, a shorter and a longer version. The shorter route has 35 kilometers and 600m of ascent, starting at 11:20 am. The path passes through the towns and villages of the municipality of Marčana, from Rakalj towards Krnica, via Mutvoran through the forest, pastures and a steep climb to reach Mutvoran, from where the forest road through Cokuni and Cveki leads to Veliki Vareški. From Veliki Vareški, the Polish road leads to Kavran and the refreshment station. After a quick refreshment, cyclists descend to the sea in the bays of Mala and Velika Vinjola, from where they reach Peruški via the promenade and the beach in Duga Uvala. From Peruški, a technical descent leads to the puddle, and a short climb to the asphalt that leads to Krnički Porat (Port of Krnica). The asphalt descent into Krnički Porat itself was made to be even more exciting and interesting than the monotonous and too-fast road – a technical descent along the water channel that leads to the bottom of the road and enters the harbor, from which the cyclists climb to the finish line, has been inserted! The longer course has 61 kilometers and a little more than 1,300 meters of ascent, is more demanding and presents a challenge to every competitor! Competitors who ride the longer course start first and, accompanied by the organizers, drive through the place until they turn onto a side street, which they will later use to win a position for the first technical descent towards Blaz bay through the forest to the village of Belavići. Along the stone path, they reach water sources and mills, past which the promenade begins the path to Rakalj through a technically demanding ascent back to Rakalj. Passing through Rakalj, another technical segment follows, a rocky descent from the church of St. Agnes to the bay of Sv. Mikula, where the Stjepan Hauser trail begins. The trail passes through the beautiful bay of Luka, and at the very end follows the macadam climb to the Rakalj road and the first refreshment station. Through Rakalj, the longer trail joins the trail of the shorter trail and takes the same route to Kavran, and after Kavran and another refreshing station, there is a wonderful trail descent towards the bay of Punta Sika. And as every beautiful descent is followed by an ascent, so cyclists at the top of the ascent will again catch the trail of a shorter trail and follow it to the very end. ͧͨͩͪ The desire and goal of this marathon is to bring this preserved part of the eastern Istrian coast closer to lovers of mountain biking and nature.

It started with the bicycle race in 2017, which “opened” the Hauser promenade, after which the idea of a marathon was born. Competitors support the race by coming year after year. Last year, slightly more than 100 competitors started. This year we are repeating the bike adventure, and since the race is officially part of the Croatian Cup for which licensed cyclists compete, we expect the race to reach 200 competitors. The most important thing of all is the experience that cyclists will take with them as a memory of a fantastic weekend, beautiful landscapes, magical bays, forest paths and challenging technical segments!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPECTATORS OF THE MTB MARATHON: The most attractive and safe location for watching the race is the viewpoint near the church of St. Agnes and the plateau in front of the church, from which the view of the arrival of cyclists and their departure along the Stjepan Hauser promenade. Spectators are advised to be careful when approaching the race route, which will be marked with arrows along the road and on the road, and secured by stewards.
